The Need
Share the stories of Indigenous Community Members experiences of COVID-19 in Ottawa.
What We Did
The Ottawa Aboriginal Coalition, together with Ottawa Public Health and the University of Ottawa Institute of Mental Health Research launched a survey on May 19th 2021. The purpose of this research was to gather the stories of Indigenous community members experiences of COVID-19 in Ottawa. The survey was open for two months and 1077 community members participated in the survey.

Priorities
The experience of navigating COVID-19 highlighted that, although the majority of Indigenous people reside in urban areas and outside their First Nation, Inuit, and Métis home communities, the specific challenges faced by urban Indigenous populations are not always acknowledged by government decision-makers. Our COVID-19 research project identified the following key priorities for urban Indigenous communities:

About the Project
What We Did
One year after COVID-19 in 2021 the OAC did a survey to find out what happened during the first year of the Pandemic for Ottawa Urban Indigenous people.
1000+ Stories
Over 1000 community members shared their stories and experiences of what happened during the first year of COVID-19.
Where We Are Now
We are currently analyzing the data to consolidate individuals' experiences, aiming to narrate the impact of the first year of the pandemic on Ottawa's Urban Indigenous community.
Presentations
The initial themes of the research were presented to the community in September 2023, followed by a presentation at the OAC Career Fair on November 30, 2023. On October 2, 2023, we also presented at the Metropolis Social Determinants of Health Conference, and additionally, we shared Inuit-specific data at the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami Housing Conference on February 7, 2024.
