What is the Children's Pow Wow?

The Ottawa Indigenous Children and Youth Pow Wow is an annual cultural celebration that brings together Indigenous children, youth, families, and the wider community to honour and share Indigenous traditions, identity, and heritage. The Children's Pow Wow is a community pow wow and is being organized by many community members and organizations. This year Minwaashin Lodge is the co-lead with Makonsag Headstart, Innuqatigiit, Odawa, Indigenous Early Years, Aunties on the Road and the Ottawa Aboriginal Coalition. The event creates a welcoming space where people of all backgrounds can experience traditional songs, dances, ceremonies, and teachings.

At its heart, the Pow Wow is about connection, culture, and community. It provides opportunities for young people to engage with their cultural roots through meaningful ceremonies such as baby welcoming, first-time dancer, and walking-out ceremonies, each offering guidance and support while reinforcing the shared responsibility of passing on traditions to future generations.

All are welcome!

Please join us in fostering a spirit of positivity and respect by ensuring that this event remains free from drugs, alcohol, and disrespectful language. Let us embody the seven grandfather teachings as we guide our youngest members.

We acknowledge the gift of being on Anishnabek territory and specifically on Algonquin Territory. We want to recognize the two closest Algonquin First Nation communities: Kitigan Zibi and the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan. We also recognize that today - Ottawa is a gathering place for First Nations, Inuit and Métis from across Canada. This land acknowledgement commits us to the original relationship we were building together – through friendship and peace.
