During the September 2018 Community Forum, several very special community members were honoured.
Irene Compton is First Nations Saulteaux from the Keeseekoose band in Saskatchewan. Irene is an original co-founder of Minwaashin Lodge - the Indigenous Women’s Support Centre, which is celebrating 25 years of service. Irene is honoured today for her commitment in providing programs and services to First Nations, Inuit and Métis women and children in our community who are survivors of family violence and the residential school system, including those impacted by intergenerational effects. Her dedication and passion has helped strengthen generations of families in our community.
Ms. MacKinnon has worked in the social and health fields for the last 40 years after earning her Masters of Social Work degree at the University of Ottawa. Today, she is honoured for her service as Executive Director for the Children’s Aid Society of Ottawa since April 2003 where she will retire later this year. Barb has provided a great deal of leadership in showing that Indigenous organizations and non-Indigenous organizations, including child welfare, can work together toward common goals. She has committed to establishing new expectations in CAS Ottawa to the service approach to Indigenous families that is based on the needs of the Indigenous community. Her leadership will be missed.
