Substance Use - Mental Wellness Counsellor

Position reports to: Manager, Counselling Services Location: 100- 1155 Lola, Ottawa, Ontario Work Conditions: Located in an office setting; very low/low risk environment 

SUMMARY: The Substance Use - Mental Wellness Counsellor reports to the Manager of Counselling Services and is responsible for the development and implementation of individual and group counselling to First Nations, Inuit and Metis women and youth. She will use contemporary and traditional healing practices in supporting clients of Minwaashin Lodge and Oshki Kizis Lodge. The Substance Use-Mental Wellness Counsellor will participate in a collaborative wrap around process with clients, health care providers, traditional healers and elders to ensure comprehensive service coordination related to individual needs. RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Conduct intakes and assessments with individuals having trouble with substances. 2. Develop and implement a range of direct services for members of the Indigenous community, including counseling, and/or psycho-educational support groups. 3. Work in close collaboration with counselling team. 4. Work in partnership with Indigenous and non-Indigenous agencies in the Ottawa area. 5. Maintain accurate statistics and progress notes. 6. Provide written and verbal reports as required

QUALIFICATIONS: 1. A certification or a diploma in the field of social work and or Addiction/Prevention; 2. Expertise providing crisis intervention and stabilization to individuals who are experiencing or have experienced the impacts from substance use; 3. Demonstrated understanding of a variety of counselling techniques and group facilitation; 4. Has a solid understanding of cultural competency and sensitivity; 5. Committed to a feminist, holistic approach working in close collaboration with team members, grandmothers and Elders; 6. Functional knowledge of the Indigenous and non-Indigenous service system of Ottawa; 7. Excellent knowledge of the intergenerational impacts of residential schools; 8. Has the ability to work effectively as part of a team and interact with workers from a variety of agencies; 9. Has a strong sense of respect for confidentiality involving both clients and fellow employees; 10. Has excellent oral and written communication skills and has the ability to complete and submit the monthly reporting tool to the City; 11. Has a good understanding of problem-solving, organizational and time management skills; 12. Has the ability to work independently with strong sense of focus, task-oriented, nonjudgmental, and a clear sense of professional boundaries.

 SPECIFICATIONS: 1. Some evening and week-end work required 2. Computer skills and literacy 3. Three references preferred 4. First Aid and CPR 5. Current Vulnerable persons check 6. Indigenous descent preferred 7. Valid Drivers License with a clean driving record an asset.
