Inuuqatigiit Centre for Inuit Children, Youth and Families is a multi service nonprofit organization serving Inuit children, youth, and their families. We are dedicated to providing cultural, educational, and support services in a caring, respectful, and collaborative environment that fosters strong and proud Inuit children and families. 

 

Position:   Educational Assistant Hours:   37.5 hours per week – Full-Time Determinate to June 30, 2021 

Salary Range:  $38,076 - $46,538 (pro-rated) per annum             


POSITION SUMMARY Under the supervision of the Manager of Early Years, the Educational Assistant is responsible to provide an inclusive, safe, caring, developmentally appropriate early learning environment for a student who requires additional supports while attending the Kindergarten program. 

 

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

• Advocate for the inclusion of all children; 

• Facilitates the inclusion of a student with diverse needs by encouraging and supporting them to become independent learners and members of the classroom, school and community; 

• Observes and documents learner strengths, achievements, needs and behaviours through daily learning activities; 

• Contribute to Individual Education Plan (IEP) in consultation with OCDSB staff (OCT, ECE, LST); 

 

• Reviews and reinforces learning activities using lesson plans and learning strategies developed by the learning support team to help students to master concepts and skills; 

• Gathers and shares relevant information about the performance and behaviour of individual learners to support IEP goals, transitions and program design through IEP and other consultative meetings with teachers, parents, and therapists; 

• Supports students in learning communication skills and social/emotional strategies as outlined in the IEP or as needed on a daily basis; 

• In collaboration with the Kindergarten team, produces materials and implements strategies to accommodate individual learner needs /styles;  

• Evaluate and adapt activities as needed; 

• Model appropriate language, conflict resolution, empathy, problem solving and coping skills; 

• Recommend and source specific equipment and materials to meet the needs of the child;  

 

 


 • Build staff capacity by modelling skills, sharing information, resources, and strategies with EY staff in meeting needs of individual child; and 

• Ensure Public Health Guidelines for COVID-19 pandemic are followed at all times. 

 

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS 

• Participate in EY team meetings to review child’s needs and progress; 

• Build partnerships and relations with other service providers (e.g. First Words, CHEO, OCDSB); 

• Collaborate with and seek input from OCDSB staff and EY staff in planning for individual child; 

• Develop positive relationships with child and parents; and 

• Develop supportive and professional rapport with Inuuqatigiit and OCDSB staff. 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS 

• Work regular and consistent weekly hours of work;  Physical ability to access three-story building; 

• Demonstrate stress management and energy in interacting with school children and parents; 

• Mental effort is required to deal with stress related to safety of children, program delivery and communications with parents; 

• Ensure personal safety precautions are observed at all times. 

 

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS 

• Inuit descent preferred; 

• Written and spoken fluency in Inuktitut an asset; 

• Experience working with Inuit or Indigenous communities preferred; 

• Knowledge of the needs of Inuit children and families; 

• Knowledge of Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit Principles to build relationships with    children and families; 

• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing in English and Inuktitut; 

• Ability to work in a collaborative staff team environment; 

• Ability to function effectively in a high stress, high noise environment; 

• Ability to operate computer systems and relevant software; and 

• Enthusiasm, flexibility, dedication, and commitment to children. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS 

• Early Childhood Education diploma or completion of other relevant, post- secondary education required; 

• Resource Teacher/Consulting Certificate required; 

• Autism & Behavioural Sciences Programs considered an asset 

• Experience working in a school or educational setting; 

• Minimum of three years’ experience working with children with special needs and/or behavioural challenges; and 

• Experience working with Inuit or Indigenous communities preferred. 

• Vulnerable Sector Check required; 

• Medical certification of good health and record of up-to-date immunizations; 

• TB Test, if applicable; and 

• First Aid/CPR Certification (or willingness to become certified).
